Seer Data is pleased to announce Alister Ferguson has been appointed to the Board of Directors joining company Chair Deanne Weir and other directors Rod Johnson, Dr. Ian Opperman and Founder, Kristi Mansfield. Alister is the Founder and Executive Director of Maranguka, the largest data-driven, community-led project in Australia. His commitment to empowering communities to take charge of their own challenges and data has been widely recognised around Australia. He has joined the Seer Data board to support the company’s strategy to continue to empower communities with data for community-led and shared decision making.
We are also delighted to announce that last week, in a significant development for the Bourke community, the Western NSW Local Health District (WNSWLHD), Maranguka Community Hub, and Seer Data entered into a groundbreaking data-sharing agreement (DSA). This agreement is designed to support the Bourke community by utilising data-driven decision-making to create services that are specifically tailored to meet local needs.

Under Alister’s leadership, Maranguka has been leveraging data from various sources, including WNSWLHD, NSW Health, and non-government agencies, to gain a comprehensive understanding of the needs within the Bourke community. The DSA, signed on August 15th, formalises the processes around data sharing, storage, and use, further solidifying the long-standing relationship between WNSWLHD and Maranguka.
Seer Data has played a vital role in this process by providing technical expertise and powering the Palimaa data platform, a secure, interactive platform for data storage, analysis and storytelling and operationalising First Nations Data Sovereignty for the community of Bourke.
WNSWLHD’s commitment to ensuring the cultural safety and appropriateness of the DSA has been paramount. Extensive consultation was undertaken to implement protections that respect First Nations Data Sovereignty and patient confidentiality. This ensures that the rights, experiences, values, and knowledge of Aboriginal people and communities are upheld in the use of data for service planning and delivery.
The DSA aligns with WNSWLHD’s broader commitment to reconciliation, strengthening governance processes and relationships with Aboriginal organisations as part of their Reconciliation Action Plan. This agreement represents a significant milestone in community-led data management, demonstrating the power of collaboration in addressing the unique needs of the Bourke community.
With Alister Ferguson now on the Board of Seer Data, his extensive experience and insights will further enhance the company’s mission to empower communities through data-driven solutions. His leadership in Maranguka exemplifies a broader vision of communities taking charge of their destinies, ensuring that service planning is not only data-driven but also community-led.
